It Takes a Village

Have you ever noticed that kids have no issue asking for help? My six- and three-year-old are constantly asking, “Mommy, can you help get me a drink? Can you tuck me in? Can you braid my hair?”

And isn’t it funny how life changes?

Asking for help is hard for me. I started working when I was 13 to pay for anything extra in life that I wanted. As a result, I’m fiercely independent, willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and incredibly impatient (so they tell me).

And so, the launch of Forge has been incredibly humbling.

The people who were willing to offer their time, intellect, creativity—all of it—in order to create a brand that represented my heart was nothing short of truly amazing. My dearest and closest friends helped create Forge—the logo, brand, and the website—to a level of perfection I could not have dreamed up.

My previous boss helped me review my business plan to make sure it was solid. A CEO I used to work with probed me on my “elevator pitch.” Another dear friend’s husband helped code my job portal. Another friend took my headshot. Other business connections affirmed what I was doing.

In short, I never expected this level of support in my wildest dreams. 

Your community matters. The people you work with. The people you go to church with. The people you have dinner with. 

COVID might have changed all those connections for a short time—but if they’ve been present, they’re still there. Invest in them. Believe in them. 

Your community is everything.

And if community isn’t why we’re doing business, then what are we doing?
